Cheese transport, the French way
The French barge “La Brie 1” has about five centimeters on each side to the stone walls of the lock. Canals run alongside French rivers that used to be navigable, like the Canal Latéral a la Garonne, in the Southwest. European canal technology was developed in Italy and Holland in the 14th century. But by then, the Egyptians had already been building canals for more than 4000 years. French canals like Briare (1642) and Canal de Midi (1681), the latter with 102 locks, served as models for canals in Europe and USA.
