The Trabant, or “Trabbi” as it was known during its love-hate relationship with the inhabitants of the old East Germany, has become a cult. But it is dead. Skoda, on the other hand, the Czech car-manufacturer, is well on its way to carving itself a place on the European car market. It’s been done with Volkswagen money, foreign management, and a complete reorganisation of working practices.
